Notarisation, apostille and legalisation
Notarisation is the notary’s act, which may include witnessing a signature or certifying a copy. An apostille authenticates an official signature or seal and the signer’s capacity. Legalisation can involve further authentication, including an embassy step. These processes serve different purposes.
Start with the document you have been asked for
A request may concern a certified passport copy, a qualification, a power of attorney or a company document. Some documents need a copy certified; others need a signature witnessed. Tell the office what you have received rather than booking an apostille on the assumption that every document follows the same route.
Work backwards from the recipient’s requirements
Ask the receiving organisation which document it needs, what wording it requires and whether further authentication is necessary. The destination alone does not answer every question: the document type and intended use also matter.
