Notarisation for overseas documents in Cork

Documents for overseas use.

A document prepared in Ireland may need additional formalities before it can be used abroad. Start with the requirements of the organisation receiving it, then discuss the notarial work with David Sweeney.

Notarisation, apostille and legalisation

Notarisation is the notary’s act, which may include witnessing a signature or certifying a copy. An apostille authenticates an official signature or seal and the signer’s capacity. Legalisation can involve further authentication, including an embassy step. These processes serve different purposes.

Work backwards from the recipient’s requirements

Ask the receiving organisation which document it needs, what wording it requires and whether further authentication is necessary. The destination alone does not answer every question: the document type and intended use also matter.

Plan the separate steps

In Ireland, the Department of Foreign Affairs provides the apostille and authentication service. Use its official website to check eligibility, fees and current arrangements. A notary appointment is separate from an application to the Department; ask the office which next steps you will need to arrange.

A FEW PRACTICAL ANSWERS

Questions about this service.

Explore all notary FAQs
Does every overseas document need an apostille?

No. Requirements and exemptions depend on the document and its destination. Confirm with the recipient and consult the official guidance before paying for additional steps.

Does an apostille approve the contents of my document?

It authenticates the relevant signature or seal and official capacity. It does not approve the contents or replace advice about the document’s legal effect.

Can the office guarantee acceptance abroad?

Acceptance is determined by the receiving authority. Give the office its instructions so the requested notarial work can be assessed; do not assume that notarisation alone completes the process.
